The beautiful arched monument called the "Aayi Mandapam" which is the symbol of Puducherry. This impressive structure situated close to the sea shore built during the reign of Napoleon II in France is named after a sixteen century courtesan Aayi who demolished her house and built a water tank instead. It was from this tank that Napoleon's men quenched their thirst some 300 years later. Napoleon Bonaparte charmed by this story, ordered a monument to Aayi in the place du gouvernment now named as the beautiful Bharathi Park. This reservoir served French Engineers later to bring water to the town
